Press Release 17.09.2007
In the context of the Government's decision on port development at Bremore, Paul Sweetman, IBEC Transport Executive said today: "Currently, over 53 million tonnes of imports and exports pass through Irish ports, representing 99% of trade by volume. Conservative estimates signal that this trade will grow to well over 70 million tonnes by 2020. With projected growth patterns and increasing demand on ports, the Irish government will urgently need to support development at both existing facilities and new developments, such as that at Bremore. A clear policy from the government must be prepared to safeguard investment in port infrastructure. In order to cater for the massive growth expected in port throughput, the government must pay serious attention to ensuring Ireland maintains and increases port capacity."
