New Deepwater Port included in Fingal Development Plan

Drogheda Port Company welcome the decision by Fingal County Councillors to insert a specific objective in the Draft Fingal County Development plan to facilitate the development of a new deepwater port at Bremore.

The Draft Fingal County Development Plan will go on public display on the 28th February for 4 weeks.

The council have also agreed to the preparation of a variation to the Plan to cater for the deepwater port development and address the effects on Balbriggan, Balscadden and the surrounding area and

Infrastructure.

The new port infrastructure will be integrated into the existing transport network with the aim of causing the minimum disruption to existing communities. Access for phase one of the port is proposed to be taken from an upgraded old N1 from the north only to the existing M1 Gormanston interchange, with later upgrades to have a new motorway interchange that is solely port-dedicated.

All such variations and plans will go on public display later this year and will be subject to the normal Strategic Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Studies.

The chairman of Drogheda Port Company Mr Patrick Traynor in welcoming the decision of the councillors stated that ‘the development of a new deepwater port has moved a step closer with the support of both the councillors and officials in Fingal. We look forward to working closely with them over the coming months on this national port project. Ireland is facing a considerable long term infrastructural deficit in port infrastructure and it is essential for continued economic growth that right kind of new port infrastructure is provided in the right location. The economic benefits of the new Bremore Deepwater Port will be considerable for the entire region and will put Balbriggan on the national map’.
