Winner of 2005 Annual Arts Commission announced
Drogheda Port Company are very pleased to announce that their fourth Annual Arts Commission has been awarded to local architectural furniture designer, Mr Joe Lawler. Submissions were invited from local artists for an internal sculpture or piece of art in any medium based on a maritime or port related theme.

Based in Donacarney, Joe Lawler designs and makes fine furniture and sculptural pieces for indoors and outdoors. Working mostly to commission he uses native irish timber is his projects. For the 2005 Arts Commission, Joe proposes to produce a maritime chair, the form of which is inspired by a ship in full sail.

The response to this year’s Commission was higher than ever, with a very wide range of submissions making the awarding of the commission a more difficult than ever choice for the Port. However, in the end we feel that John Lawlor’s innovative chair design will make a wonderful contribution to our collection, following in the footsteps of John Moloney, Paul McCann and last year’s artist, Anne Mullen O’Brien. The Port Company would like to extend its sincerest thanks to all those who responded to our invitations to submit and look forward to future submissions from these artists.

Joe is both honoured and delighted that the Drogheda Port Company have commissioned one of his chairs for their collection and would expect to complete the commission for June next year.
