
The Boyne Swim celebrated a significant milestone on Saturday July 20th, 2024, marking the 10th year since its inception. This year's swim was particularly special, celebrating a decade of achievements, community spirit, and the promotion of open water swimming. The renowned open water swimming event which first made waves in 2014, has grown exponentially over the past decade, and this year’s event was no exception.
The 2024 Boyne Swim welcomed 154 participants, with swimmers from all over Ireland and beyond converging on the historic River Boyne to take part in the challenging 2.7-kilometer course. Competitors, ranging from seasoned athletes to enthusiastic amateurs, braved the waters, showcasing the event's inclusive spirit and growing popularity.
The event kicked off from upper Mell, Drogheda at 11.30 am, with ideal weather conditions setting the stage for an exhilarating race. Spectators lined the riverbanks, cheering on the swimmers and adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
The race finish was thrilling as Ben Moran, 18 years old, of Aer Lingus Swim Club emerged from the water and clinched the overall winner title completing the course in an impressive time of 31 minutes and 55 seconds. In the senior women's category, Cliodhna Delaney emerged victorious with a remarkable time of 36 minutes and 55 seconds. Overall Junior Male title went to Eoin Lumsden with 36.55 minutes and overall Junior Female was won by Maria Carton with 42.01 minutes.
Mr. Gerard Deegan of Drogheda Port Company and Mr. Ray Donagh of Drogheda Triathlon Club presented each of the overall winners with the iconic Drogheda Port perpetual trophies. Ms. Gillian Farrelly of Aura Leisure presented all 24 medal winners in their respective categories.
