The Archives of Drogheda Port

Drogheda Port has preserved a unique archive relating to its operation since 1790, recording the industrial and social life of the town. The industrial and commercial archive contains an extensive overview of the day to day activities of the port, including minutes of meetings, accounts, engineers reports, correspondences, invoices, notices, details of ships and cargoes, photographs, mapping and audio interviews.

Currently the archive is being catalogued and will be digitized at a future date.

In 1990 a recorded archive was created consisting of interviews with many people associated with the port over the years.

From time to time the archive is made available for study and research purposes, however our archive is currently closed.

In 2018 Drogheda Port Company donated a unique set of Maritime Reports to the Drogheda Museum at Millmount.  These reports, were part of the port’s overall maritime archive and these particular original reports date from 1853 to 1907.  They contained the annual financial reports of the company and a detailed engineering report of the activities of the company over the course of the particular Year.

Containing a wealth of information on the port activities at the time, the state of the river, dredging, wall and beacon construction, the condition of the steam barges and tugs, many of the localised place names are long forgotten but preserved in the reports.

These accounts and reports were published each year and produced in local printing houses like Alex McDougal, No 5 Peter Street, Drogheda & Samuel Wisdom, No 20 Fair Street Drogheda & at the Reporter Office, No 15 Laurence Street, Drogheda.
