
The Drogheda Sail Training Bursary proudly recognised two exceptional young sailors, Tom Elliot and Ellie Donaghue, with the prestigious Outstanding Trainee Awards at the annual Sail Training Ireland Awards Ceremony, held at the Mansion House in Dublin on Saturday, 8th February.
The awards celebrate the dedication, teamwork, and personal growth of trainees who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and leadership during their sail training experiences. Tom and Ellie were selected from a local group of fantastic trainees for their enthusiasm, resilience, and exceptional performance at sea during the 2024 Drogheda Sail Training Programme.
Representatives from Drogheda Port Company and Sail Training Ireland commended the young trainees for their achievements. Speaking at the event, a spokesperson for Sail Training Ireland said: “Tom and Ellie have exemplified the spirit of sail training—showing courage, determination, and teamwork. Their success highlights the transformative impact of these programs on young people’s lives.”
The Drogheda Sail Training Bursary, proudly supported by Drogheda Port Company, Louth County Council, Irish Cement, Boskalis Irish Dredging and East Terminals Ireland, provides young people with life-changing sail training opportunities aboard traditional sailing vessels. Through these experiences, trainees gain vital skills in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while fostering a deep appreciation for maritime heritage.
Sail Training Ireland, the national sail training organisation, has been instrumental in offering young people from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to embark on these unique voyages of self-discovery. The awards ceremony at the Mansion House gathered trainees, sponsors, and maritime enthusiasts to celebrate the impact of sail training across Ireland.
Both Tom and Ellie are extremely proud of their award and expressed their gratitude for the experience which taught them many valuable life lessons.
The Drogheda Sail Training Bursary looks forward to continuing its mission of empowering young people through sail training, ensuring more aspiring sailors can set sail and challenge themselves in the years to come.
