Under glorious sunshine the River Boyne was the perfect setting for a spectacular day of sport and community enjoyment on Saturday as swimmers took part in the 2025 Boyne Swim, run with great continued success by the Drogheda Triathlon Club.
The annual event, now a mainstay in local and national sporting calendars, drew 153 swimmers of all ages and abilities from all over the country to take on the ambitious 2.7klm stretch of the River Boyne. Beginning at Mell and finishing at the Boyne Fishermen’s Boathouse on Marsh Road, the course took participants under some of Drogheda’s iconic bridges, including the Viaduct and St. Mary’s Bridge with spectators lining the banks along the route to cheer everyone on.
Emerging first out of the water was Dylan Brady, a super talented junior swimmer from Drogheda Swimming Club. At only 16 years old, Dylan from Donore, Co. Meath delivered a standout performance and claimed the overall winner title, completing the race in an impressive speed of 33.09 minutes.
Second out of the water in 37.56 minutes and claiming the senior male category title was another well-known Drogheda swimmer Colin Lowth. As a previous overall winner of the swim, Colin is gathering an impressive collection of titles at this event.
Nora Veddar of swan leisure swim club displayed a strong performance taking the senior female title in 42.45 minutes and Junior female accolade went to another impressive Drogheda swimmer Aimee Rice in 46..33 minutes.
Three top trophy spots marks a huge achievement for the Drogheda Swimming Club, which has a long-standing tradition of nurturing young talent. The iconic perpetual trophies, designed and sculpted by Ronan Halpin and winners’ medals were presented by representatives from Drogheda Triathlon Club, Drogheda Port Company and Aura Leisure.
Speaking at the event’s closing presentations, Ray Donagh of the Drogheda Triathlon Club extended heartfelt thanks to the many individuals and groups who helped make the day a success. He paid special tribute to the event organisers in The Drogheda Tri-Club, Drogheda Port Company, Aura Leisure, and The Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery, who provided their wonderful headquarters facility for the event and offered invaluable safety support throughout the day.
“The effort behind the scenes is what makes this event possible,” Ray Donagh said. “From the safety volunteers in boats and kayaks to the onshore teams, every person played a vital role in ensuring the swim ran smoothly and safely.”
As the Boyne Swim cements its reputation as a must-do race for open water enthusiasts, local pride in the event continues to rise. With community spirit, athletic talent, and scenic beauty all on display, this year's swim was truly one to remember.
